My name is Susan Sempeles. I am a storyteller for children, with plans to publish my stories in a variety of media, including books, magazine features and online outlets.

My writing life began in 3rd grade when I created an award-winning poem about dental hygiene. Wisely, I got more formal training with a journalism degree. Putting myself through college, I happily worked around books of all kinds at the State Library of Pennsylvania and First Edition Bookstore. My degree led to professional writing opportunities in a variety of fields.

Now I am tackling a truly rewarding assignment – to create joyful stories for children. I continuously work to perfect my craft through programs and classes at Highlights Foundation, Picture Book Summit, and 12x12 Picture Book Challenge, among others. I am proud to be a longtime Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators member, student, and critique group leader.

One of my favorite parts of this journey has been to read and study picture books and immerse myself in craft classes focused on this unique category of kidlit. From time to time, I will share my take on new releases in the PB universe, as well as some older gems that I think stand the test of time.
